It is an important component of the intercellular matrix. In joints, it is found in the synovial fluid, where it nourishes the articular cartilage and acts as a lubricant (smoothing bone movement), in addition to absorbing the impacts caused by the animal's movement. It is the compound that gives the synovial fluid its viscosity. Because it helps maintain joint cells, it is often used for horses that suffer great joint stress due to strenuous exercise.

SSN HA 150 provides 300mg of hyaluronic acid per 30mL. It is packaged in 15mL sachets and is recommended to be administered orally, one sachet twice a day, during or immediately after a meal. Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan that is ubiquitous in the extracellular matrix. It is found in the endothelial glycocalyx that covers the apical surface of endothelial cells. This glycocalyx regulates the permeability and homeostasis of blood vessels. HA plays a central role in numerous functions of the superficial layer of the endothelium, protecting its cells, regulating the permeability of the barrier and ensuring mechanical sensitivity, essential for the production of nitric oxide and vasodilation induced by blood flow.
Horses undergoing strenuous exercise have much higher blood pressure (just under 10 times that of a horse at rest). There is evidence that the extremely high pressure in the pulmonary circulation during exercise results in the failure of blood capillaries, resulting in hemorrhages in the alveoli (spaces containing air, where oxygen is absorbed from the blood to enter the circulation).
Oral supplementation with sodium hyaluronate helps support capillaries and the general health of blood vessels.
